Extract from the diary of Maj P K Glazebrook, Cheshire Yeomanry, Egypt Expeditionary Force

A route march of about eight miles in the morning, over old bare sand & stone, without a single bird, beast or tree to look at. Carlon & his gunners came out with us, & will probably not be particularly keen to do it again, except that it is equally dull whether one goes out for a route march or not! We had a night marching point-to-point after dinner, with about four points to march on. One of the four parties got pretty badly lost, & came in three-quarters of an hour after those who had started round the course after them. Anything to occupy the men without boring them!
