Extract from war diary of LCpl Alexander Saunders, 8th Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment

[In Mesopotamia]

Breakfast about 7:30am. Cleaned tent out and made it dry. Parade about 10am. Fatigues night under canvas.
Received letter from  Elsie dated breaksJan. 3rd

Extract from war diary of 10th Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment

HQ Hope House

MEANEE DAY.    At 10.40 AM. One officer and 65 other ranks from A. C. & D Coys under CAPT. I. S. APPLETON successfully raided the enemy’s trenches north of FACTORY FARM between points U.15. d. 94 & U.15. d. 85. 85. inflicting heavy casualties upon the enemy – Many dugouts were bombed – Bomb dumps – trench materials destroyed – Ten prisoners were taken however 8 of this number were caught by their own M/C Gun fire & killed crossing NO MANS LAND to our line.

Officers leading parties were :- CAPT. I. S. APPLETON (in command) 2nd LIEUT ROWE (A Coy) 2nd LIEUT  NICHOLLS (C Coy)  2nd LIEUT MANNING (D Coy)

2nd LIEUT MANNING died of wounds.   2nd LIEUT NICHOLLS & 2nd LIEUT BLES wounded.
