Extract from war diary of LCpl Alexander Saunders, 8th Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment

[In Mesopotamia]

Bread. Cross Tigris on new pontoon bridge about 5:30am. March about two miles and rest before breakfast. March till about 4pm. Rest for about half an hour and then move off under heavy artillery fire and march about two hours and then returned to where we rested.
