23 April 1917

Extract from the diary of Norman Hughes, “B” Coy, 1/4th Cheshire Regiment 53rd (Welsh) Division [Norman Hughes came from Neston]

At stand to this morning  – 3 Turkish deserters come into our trench.   It is said that they were of rank – 2 sergeant[s] and the other a corporal, and the latter said they come in to us because of the short issues of rations. They had their overcoats with them, but one man had no boots.  We are about 700 yds from the Turkish trench which we can see quite plainly.
