Extract from the diary of Maj P K Glazebrook, Cheshire Yeomanry, Egypt Expeditionary Force

There was a raid on the cactus garden last night, by fifty men of the montgomery’s battalion, under Willie Dugdale I believe. There was a good deal of rifle firing. It is rumoured that 20 Turks were put out of action at the cost of one man killed. Anyhow it is lucky for me that I was told not to go to the place last night, as my scheme was to crawl in with three men & leave the rest in support. It is also rumoured that a patrol of the Lanarks two days ago failed to return. There were two aerial fights in the evening, one of which I saw well. To our great grief our machine was driven down (in both cases) but I believe landed safely. Back to the trenches.
