Extract from war diary of 1st Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment

Front line trenches

Battalion relieved 1st BEDFORDS in front line, left Battalion front, S. of ARLEUX. “C” and “D” Coys in firing line, “A” and “B” Coys in support. Work continued on front line and communication trenches. “NO MAN’S LAND” patrolled after dark by patrols from both firing line Coys. Great deal of hostile Machine Gun fire after dark. Sergt MANDEVILLE., D.C.M., M.M., killed while returning from patrol.
