Extract from war diary of 9th Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment

Near Chambrecy

The strength of the Battalion was now 4 Officers 200 Other Ranks Officers Capt R.H. GRIFFITHS (Comdg) Capt Adjt. D. GREVILLE, Lieut. E. SIMCOCK. 2nd Lieut W.B. WRIGHT.  The line held was facing North in front of the MONTAGNE de BLIGNY and across the valley to the stream running from the village of CHAMBRECY to SARSY (the railway bridge being in the front line).  Brigade dispositions were as shown in BM.151/5 (App K88).  Battalion H.Q. was established at the kink in the road 500 yards North of the R in CHAMBRECY (Ref. Map SOISSONS 1/100,000).  The transport moved to the neighbourhood of HAUTVILLERS.  Except for intermittent shelling the day passed quietly, considerable enemy movement was observed in the neighbourhood of BOIS D’AULNAY and transport and guns could be seen moving forward from LHERY.  At 7.15 pm, however, orders were received for the Brigade to withdraw slightly, to conform with the situation on the left (App. K. 90).  This was completed by 8.p.m by the Battalion without losses.  At night the new line was reorganised and dispositions made in depth – two platoons (strength about 80) being put in the BOIS D’ECLISSE about the R of CHAMBRECY.  Battn H.Q. was established about 200 yards South of the E in CHAMBRECY.
