Extract from war diary of 23rd Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment

Warcoing

15.45 After artillery treatment of known hostile M-G. and T-M posts D.Coy establishes line of posts on E. bank of River L’ESCAU. Casualty 1 O.R. wounded.     Simultaneously No 10. Platoon of C. Coy under Sec. Lieut.   Hamilton crosses, river and advances along causeway towards HERRINES in order to establish post in crater. Enemy evacuate crater which is occupied by our patrol. Subsequently crater and causeway is subjected to heavy artillery and T-M bombardment. Two T-M shells fall into crater wounding Sec-Lieut Hamilton and killing or wounding every man in the post.

The Platoon withdraws to W. bank of river under heavy shrapnel H.E. & Gas Shell bombardment. Casualties:- officers,  1 wounded      Other ranks, 2 killed  16 wounded  2 missing
