Extract from war diary of 6th Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment


The Battalion engaged in special training in open warfare on training area.  Artillery formation, extended order drill, musketry, outposts, physical training and bayonet fighting, constituting the programme of training carried out.

2 O.R. to Hospital Sick.   3 O.R. rejoined ex Hospital.

2nd Lieut H.Melling left to join R.F.C. on probation, and struck off strength of Battalion.

2 O.R. transferred to M.G.C. (H.B.)., and struck off strength.

In line

4 Other Ranks sent down to Transport for 1st Army Rest Camp.

Capt Mills and 4 Other Ranks sent down for leave.

Slight shelling near “C” Company in Old British Line, Sugar Factory and Bailleul.

Officers patrol examined enemies [sic] wire, found enemy posts and machine gun and encountered enemy patrol.

All Companies at work Consolidating and improving.

Our heavies shelled enemy front line all day.

Much salvage work done.
