Support line


“C” Coy bathing in the morning and working in afternoon.

“A” and “D” Coys working in the morning.  “D” Coy bathing in afternoon.

2/Lieut A.M. LEWIS and 17 O.R’s proceeded to ENGLAND on leave.

Heavy hostile shelling at 10 a.m.  “A” Coy having 8 casualties, 3 killed and 5 wounded.

Hostile bombardment of Bn H.Q and “A” Coy billets at 5-45 p.m.


16 July 1917

Forward camp

Training as usual during morning.  Musketry practice on range.

Battalion moved to Springvale Camp near Ecurie during afternoon.

Very clear day and German observation balloons could be easily discerned.

Battalion arrived in Springvale Camp about 3 p.m. – ample and splendid accommodation for all ranks in Huts.

About 8-30 pm. warning order received from Brigade stating we must be prepared to move at dawn to Roberts Camp.

About 10pm. Brigade operation order received with instructions to proceed to Roberts Camp forthwith.  The Germans had apparently observed the movement of troops during relief and shelled Wolseley Camp immediately it had been handed over by this Battalion to 16th R. Warwick Regt, causing them to vacate it.

2/Lieut A.M. LEWIS proceeded to England on leave.

Extract from war diary of 1st Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment


Capt. J.M. FORSYTH left Battalion (R.A.M.C.) Capt. ENGLISH joined Battalion (R.A.M.C.).  Part of Battalion went to Baths, remainder in cleaning up and carrying parties.  2nd Lieut’s J.E.E. OAKLEY, G.M. SWEENEY and A.M. LEWIS joined the Battalion today.
