Extract from the diary of Capt Ferguson, 1st Bn, 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment

We held a big sports meeting this afternoon, on the terraces of the gardens of this chateau. They make a fine track, five times round to the mile. It was a good show with good prizes. The officers race was won by Capt Sproule, QM, but he got a big age start. After dinner, I had some good bridge with Forsyth, [Lt-Col] Roddy & Smith; we let the New Year in with a bottle of Port.
